In India, buying a car sans a fuel efficiency rating is common. Car manufacturers do not provide the actual statistics of car mileage. The lid on fuel efficiency was recently blown when it was revealed after a study that new cars (post year 2000 models) give lesser mileage than older car models.
The Indian bureau of energy efficiency has begun the process of setting up mandatory fuel standards for cars in India. It wants car manufacturers to pass the verification tests and get a certification before their cars reach the buyer. The bureau will issue fuel efficiency labels for every car model. The process is likely to take shape by the end of this year. No more needless waste of time trying to get necessary fuel economy information of cars.

It is high time the government brought in a system for rating fuel efficiency of a car. If the manufacturers are not willing to do it voluntarily, then government should enforce rules. What is government without teeth to enforce simple rules on mileage of car?
There is urgent need to enforce rules on automotive sector in India. the fuel efficiency of cars should be regulated. After all car companies have not come forward voluntarily to disclose the fuel efficiency.
The responsibility then falls on the government to enforce the law. USA is also enforcing laws isn't it?
Fuel efficiency labels are important in a country where people do not have any other methods to establish the mileage offered by the car.
The government should not allows polluter to hit the rods at all. That way the manufacturers will also take car to provide world class technology to Indians.
