Why are Indians paying so high?
The Volkswagen Passat is priced exorbitantly high in this country. I can’t imagine that people can pay such high prices for cars that are considered ordinary in Europe and US. I own a Lexus, which has far better features and offers a better ride quality. And I come to India to visit my folks and am surprised at the costs!
I can actually get very good cars in Europe at a much lesser price than in India. I can’t imagine how it is that Indians are spending such huge amounts on ordinary cars. I hope that they conduct a thorough research before giving out lakhs of rupees for ordinary machines. It is like paying too much for too less.

I agree with Jai. I think that most foreign cars are very exorbitantly priced. The western names have always caught the fancy of Indians. It is only be creating more awareness about such details that the halo surrounding these big names will vanish.
I agree with Jai and Vicky. I own a Suzuki SX4 in US and i compared the ride quality with the same car in India. There is a huge difference among the two cars. The quality of materials in interior is very inferior and gear shift is not very smooth. Surprisingly, the prices are almost the same for both. I wonder how?
Cars in India cost 4 times what they cost in the US..example is a Merc SLK350 which sells in the US for $42K which translates to INR 16Lakhs sells from the local Merc dealer for Rs 65Lakhs. No wonder, under the current fiscal policy and governance, India is turning out to be a rich country, with the richer getting extremely quickly richer by the day..Seeing a Lamborghini Gallardo on the highways in not unbelievably unusual..try Gurgaon near Delhi for a virtual expensive cars tour
It could be anyone from the government to carmakers, somebody is taking the Indian carbuyer for a "ride", that too an expensive one, pun intended. Car prices in India are astronomical compared to other markets worldwide, no questions about it. From what I have heard, taxes are to be blamed. Indian government seems to really enjoy taxing anything that has anything to do with transportation, be it fuel or the car itself. If other countries can manage with lower taxes on automobiles or gas, why cant Indian government? If anything, cars ought to be cheaper in India because of the lower labor costs. Tax restructuring..thats the way to go I feel. Salaried individuals bear the full brunt of taxes in India, be it income tax, tax on fuel, car pretty much anything that he/she wants to buy; others go scott free-the wealthy really dont mind shelling high taxes on high end cars as they save much more evading and getting off easy on income tax- thats got to change.
