DaimlerChrysler – from Mercedes to public transport in India

Germany’s luxury car manufacturer DaimlerChrysler is planning to get into the public commuting sector in India. DaimlerChrysler builds cars that allure the rich class of the urban Indian society. It recently launched the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class in India that costs close to one Crore. As this manufacturer witnesses a massive growth in its passenger vehicle (Mercedes-Benz) production and consumption, it now wants to target the public transport sector in India.

A successful truck trade in India has led this manufacturer to believe in the idea of manufacturing buses to gratify the Indian public. Though the final decision is yet to be taken, DaimlerChrysler seem keen to enter India in this segment.

The positive growth in India’s auto parts market that caters to the auto part requirements of different parts of the world and the noticeable increase in the sales of luxury cars in India has made DaimlerChrysler look at India with optimistic eyes.

No fear of car thefts for Maruti owners

The Maruti car owners can now relax as their favourite vehicle will now come with anti-theft systems fitted as standard equipment. Vehicle thefts have been on the peak in the country with small car owners having the toughest time.

To reduce the theft rate of cars manufactured by Maruti Udyog Ltd, Maruti has started manufacturing all its cars with an engine immobilizer, which is an anti-theft device that locks the engine if the proper car key is not used. This updated security device is also known as iCAT – Intelligent Computerized Anti-theft System.

The iCAT works on digitally encrypted codes that communicate with the electronic control unit. The control unit operates only through the encrypted unique code; in other words, a duplicate key does not work without the code. Depending on the immobilizer system a car is fitted with, iCAT will raise the price of a vehicle from Rs.1000 to Rs.4500 – a small price to pay for safety. Hopefully some of the other small car manufacturers will follow this example.

India: A car manufacturing hub for Global Players

Realising India’s potential in the automotive industry, international carmakers are now focusing on India and giving more preference to India than China to establish their manufacturing plants and units.

Factors such as “ready market facility” and “low cost manufacturing base” are strong reasons that prompted international carmakers to choose India. Sriperumbudur, near the Chennai port, is the small car export base for South Korea’s Hyundai Motors.

Similarly, Suzuki, a major partner of the largest carmaker in India Maruti Udyog, is making nearly a one billion pound investment in India with an eye on 200,000 vehicle exports by 2010. Entering the market now are newcomers like France’s Renault. Nissan plans to make cars in India to export them to Europe.

Global players, in recent years, are making their entry into the Indian Market by either joint ventures, collaboration, or wholly owned subsidiaries. Relaxation of trade rules by the Indian government to promote expansion of the auto industry has encouraged global players to expand their automotive industry in India.

Carmakers are expecting the annual output to exceed three million cars by 2010. Foreign automakers can now set up their own fully owned subsidiaries giving India a potential edge over China, which has a local partner mandate. Global car manufacturers are scrambling to set up their auto plant for small car variations in India indicating that India, in the near future, is on its way to become a small car export hub.

Lamborgini in India pave their private roads

“Wanna jump up in my Lamborghini Gallardo” hit the streets and pubs of India with the release of the album “Smack that” by Akorn.

India witnessed the entry of the Lamborgini at the end of last year. Three of its latest international models that rolled out in India were the Sports-cum-luxury sedan Gallardo, the convertible ‘Gallardo Spyder’, and the 2-door coupe Murcielago.

India was most keyed up during the launch of Gallardo, one of the most luxurious international sports cars in 2006. Lamborghini, the Italian luxury sports car maker had already sold six cars in India and was expecting to finish the year with ten. And they were all set to drive in its best selling model ‘Gallardo’ to India within the first quarter of 2006.

However, the potential and power of the Lamborgini is wasted due to the heavy traffic issues in India. The growing crorepati car bazaar is facing a serious crisis when rolling out cars like the Lamborgini and the Ferrari on Indian streets. The proud owners of expensive imported sport cars in Mumbai are now mapping out their very own decent roads to roll in their high performance sports cars.

Car security for Pedestrians

Usually, safety features and security systems in a car aim at protecting the occupants, when an accident occurs. There are features like airbags, head restraints, collapsible steering-wheel and many other accessories that protect the passengers from incurring serious injuries.

What if a vehicle hits a pedestrian?

Nissan is developing a concept called “pop-up engine”, a safety feature to protect a walker-by. When a collision occurs, a protective cushion instantly pops out to save the victim from serious injuries. This feature will initially be seen in the latest Skyline Coupe. In the near future it can be expected that all Nissan models as well as different manufacturers will adopt this technology that aims to protect innocent pedestrians in a car-pedestrian collision.

Big aiming Small – Honda is next in India

The flourishing market for small cars in India has made the manufacturers think about it acutely. Almost all the major manufacturers have jumped into this arena and the rest are seriously thinking of it. Recently, Japanese auto major Honda has announced that it will launch its small car by 2009. Till date, Honda was a popular name among the big executive cars.

This small car named as “Fit” is designed to be sporty and roomy. Styling is aimed more at the driver’s convenience. Added to this, the exteriors are designed according to aerodynamic tactics that will definitely boost fuel economy. According to a company release, the car is equipped with continuously variable transmission, which makes the car “jostle in a jiff” around the country. It also satisfies emission and safety norms needed by a small car. With the car promising mileage, comfort, and convenience, no-doubt most of us will be waiting to welcome the small car from a big manufacturer.

Ford announcing its plans for small cars can be taken as a challenge by the other small-car makers, who will definitely try to upgrade their cars with all modern accessories, before the said car is launched.
